In Oprah’s Defense & Marcie’s Note to O

26 May

Oprah Winfrey

I was listening to a talk radio show today and a caller said that she did not watch Oprah in her 25 years on TV because she didn’t feel like O had used her platform to address black issues.

Ok, there are my thoughts to that statement.

First of all, it was called The Oprah Winfrey Show. She did what she wanted to do because she could.

Second, why do black people expect black people who have “made it” or have risen to certain levels of accomplishment to address “black issues?’ They say the same thing about President Barack Obama. Here’s the catch 22 for O, the Prez and other black people who achieve success. Although they would probably like to serve black people, black people are their greatest critics. How does this work exactly?

And what ticks me off about all of this is that while black people are looking to black people who have made it to address black issues, they can do it themselves. It’s a wide open opportunity for anyone who is willing to step out and speak up.

Third, why should black people with huge platforms address black people issues when it appears that black people don’t really care about them themselves?  Honestly, that is one of the reasons why I haven’t done as much as I could with my community site. There are a lot of issues I could address and keep them going, but why should I care more about issues than people who are affected by those issues directly? And, should I decide to step up and actually do something, I really feel I will be standing alone.

Fourth, where’s the support from the black people who want her to address the issues? So many criticized O for opening a school in Africa when there’s a need in the United States. Seriously? That’s the biggest crock of bull I had ever heard. And I’m still hearing it. Give me a freaking break!!

The school she opened was created for youngsters who would not have otherwise had an opportunity to go to school. In the United States, school doors are open every day, yet young people choose NOT to go in or their parents do not make them. But the difference in this situation is opportunity and the value placed on education.

I could go on and on that topic but I’m not.

But my note to Oprah. You have done well. All of the speakers and viewers have said the things I would have said about your accomplishments. Your allowed you to share your purpose and shine your light on others. Ending your show after 25 yeas was a sign of wisdom. You got word that your season was over and ended on a high note.

Ok, I do have one thing to say. Your exit left room for me to create some type of media something. But, you were a good example and hard act to follow. Whatever I decide to do, I will be sure to make you proud. Even though we have not met in person, I confident the Universe will allow our paths to cross in the near future.

I do need to know one thing though. How long did it take you to make that first million after taxes?

Be blessed in all you do!
