What the Hell was Virginia Thomas Thinking?

20 Oct

Ok, I’m normally diplomatic in my blog topics and use much kinder and gentler words, but the NY Times article about Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supremee Court Justice Clarence Thomas, contacting Anita Hill for an apology and an explanation on “why you did what you did with my husband” made me come out of my hiatus to speak.

Here are details of the conversation

In a voice mail message left at 7:31 a.m. on Oct. 9, a Saturday, Virginia Thomas asked her husband’s former aide-turned-adversary to make amends. Ms. Hill played the recording, from her voice mail at Brandeis University, for The New York Times.

“Good morning Anita Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas,” it said. “I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband.”

Ms. Thomas went on: “So give it some thought. And certainly pray about this and hope that one day you will help us understand why you did what you did. O.K., have a good day.”

Huh??  Apologize?  For what? And she wants an explanation on why Hill did what she did without any word on her husband’s actions.  Nice!  Clearly, Mrs. Thomas’s idle mind is a devil’s workshop.  This is truly an intellectual version of Jerry Springer.

First of all, it is nearly 20 years after the incident.  Yes, you read correctly – 20 years. Two decades. That was enough time for healing and therapy.  Especially for a situation that had nothing to do with her directly.

Second, I’m sure Ms. Hill is not the only woman Clarence Thomas has made inappropriate remarks to.  She’s probably the only one who was brave enough to say something.

Third, I truly understand the “stand by your man” philosophy, but this is ridiculous.  Ginny, it’s 20 years later!  What the hell are you thinking?

Fourth, why is this woman confronting another woman about a man?  I don’t care whose it is.  That’s nonsense.  She should be speaking to her husband not Hill.

Fifth, what would make Thomas call Hill out of the blue? Doesn’t she have a family to care for? What about hobbies? Better yet, what about grandchildren?

Sixth, looking at the photo above and ones during the trial, I would have sued him, too.

Essemtially, I want to know why Thomas is bothering Hill after all of these years. The incident happened; now let it go.  And the bad thing is…this is not Thomas’s issue to contend with.  Not directly anyway.

I thought this was straight garbage when I read it. It’s amazing what makes the big newspapers. And people like me respond to it. This is evidence that I may be a little slow like Ms. Thomas.

Anyway, I just want Ms. Virgina to know that her unexpected actions were totally inappropriate and she should get a life.
