Marcie’s Top 10 “Must Read” Black History Books

I absolutely love reading Black history books. I feel like an Educated Negro even though I have not read half the books that have been written. Anyway, allow me to share some of the more popular Black history books. I have only read half of these books, but I can’t wait to get to the rest.  If you just have to read one book on this list, read The Mis-Education of the Negro. I promise you, this will be the best education from a book you can get. I love Carter G.!

Marcie Recommends: Believe You Can: The Power of a Positive Attitude

Believe You Can: The Power of a Positive Attitude by John Mason is an easy-to-read book of positive words and affirmations. I saw this book in Walgreens on Tuesday. After flipping through a few pages that really made me feel good, I knew I just had to have it. I purchased it on Wednesday, and I pick it up every chance I get.

It is a book of small topical chapters, with the first one encouraging you to be yourself.  But, check out some of the other quotes that really jumped out at me.

“You can succeed at almost anything for which you have limitless enthusiasm. The world belongs to the enthusiastic.”  Even if you don’t have the talent to do what you want to do, your enthusiasm will keep you going and attract the people you need to make it happen.

“Every problem introduces a person to himself.”

“To finish first you must first finish.” Just know that starting is the biggest challenge.

“Persistent people begin their success where most others quit.”

“Most people’s ‘life regrets’ come from failing to act when they have an opportunity.”

Here’s the best one I read today was by Edward H. Richards:

“A wise old owl sat on an oak;

The more he saw the less he spoke;

The less he spoke the more he heard;

Why aren’t we like that wise old bird?”

Don’t walk out to get this book. Run! It will bless your spirit!

African American Students Ages 13 – 16 Needed to Read with Me

I need 8 African American students ages 13 -16 who like to read Black history books to read with me. It doesn’t in matter which state they live. Ideally, I’ll have 1 male and 1 female in each age group.

What: We will read a couple Black history books together

Why: To read, discuss and gain a better understanding of Black History

When: Starting October 1, 2011

We are going to read one chapter per week. They have to write and discuss lessons they learned as well as their thoughts on what they read. It’s going to feel like extra homework, but it they will be more enlightened after the fact.
